Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 12, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs... for now.

Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.

Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.-from Goodreads

When I was deciding how exactly to write my review for The Fault in Our Stars, for some reason I needed to write a letter to John Green regarding his wonderful new novel.

Dear John Green,

Did you start out writing The Fault in Our Stars hoping to break every reader’s heart into tiny-tiny miniscule pieces? I guess it doesn’t really matter, but you succeeded John. At least for me and I’m guessing anyone else who picks up your book, they will be emotionally crushed when they close TFiOS after reading the last page.

John, fellow Hoosier, I enjoyed an Indiana setting. Even though I live in a part of the state that some people may feel is more a part of Chicago, Illinois than Indiana, I still enjoyed a story written set in my home state.

Thank you John, for including those couple of charts/diagrams in TFiOS. In many ways, I think your readers expect to have those or footnotes in your stories. Honestly, I almost wish you would have included more of them…just because you can.

John, you are probably the most quotable author I’ve read. You’ve probably been told that on numerous occasions, but I figured I would stroke your ego a bit and tell you once again. I won’t be sharing my favorites with you today, because I think people need to read your quotes while reading your books, not beforehand.

John, I think I love Augustus Waters more than I love Tiny Cooper from Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I always knew Tiny was a character I will never be able to forget, but I just added another character to that list. You made such memorable characters in Hazel and Augustus and I thank you for that. You made me wish I was more like them when I was their age, besides the having cancer of course. I enjoyed the witty banter between the two of them, it made me smile while other parts of the book left me in tears.

John, thank you for signing the first printing of The Fault in Our Stars. You are the man! Just a tip: Maybe next time, include a travel size package of tissues. They are a necessity.

After you finished writing TFiOS, did you know it was the best novel you’ve ever written? In my non-expert opinion, it is the best book I’ve read of yours. I guess I should be honest and say I haven’t read Paper Towns yet, and word on the street is that’s your best book to some. I hope you win some big kick-ass awards for this book. If you don’t, I will be completely ticked-off.

John, your book has made a lasting impression on me. I’m sitting her writing you this letter feeling emotionally drained and replaying your words again and again through my mind. I will not soon forget what was written in The Fault in Our Stars.

Keep on doing what you’re doing because it works,

Jacinda

P.S. I forgot to mention, you’re book gets 5 stars from me!

  3. Such a great book, right? And I love Tiny Cooper! But Augustus and Hazel were also such complex, fully-developed characters and I loved getting to know them. Before reading this, Paper Towns and WG, WG were my two favorite John Green novels. But now, I think it's a 3-way tie! TFiOS was definitely different than his other books, but still had that John Green stamp on it. A beautiful, compelling read.

Great review, and I love the letter format!

  4. This is the most perfect review EVER of this book! EVER!!

August Waters has a very special place in my heart, he will from now until the end of time, and I have a feeling that TFiOS is one book I will re-read again and again.

  5. This was the best book I've ever read! It was so funny while other parts were just heartbreaking. It's the first book that made me cry, like laying-in-a-puddle-of-your-own-tears-whole-body-shaking kind of cry. If this doesn't win an award, there will be a serious injustice.

  6. I absolutely love this review-letter, it's just perfect. I agree that he's just so quotable, hilarious at one second than he just rips your heart out the next. I agree with Jac, Augustus Waters will always have a special place in my heart too. Yes, he really did need to include a box of tissues with the book! I really LOVE this letter to John about TFiOS, so special just like the book, Thanks Jacinda!

  7. Jacinda, you are completely brilliant. Like seriously, one of the best reviews I've ever read even if it is in letter form! I love the normal reviews but come on, nothing compares to this! I clearly need to read this book (when I am in a fairly stable emotional state. I don't need to multiply the waterworks x5. lol!) and I can only imagine how awesome it is if it causes such a reaction out of you. Okay, it's late and I'm rambling but THIS IS SO AWESOME. It makes me smile :D
